the lake

Ballinafagh Lake was constructed as a reservoir (serving the Blackwood feeder) for the Grand CaBallinfagh at sunset (june 2006)nal, but when the new Allen power station needed to take cooling water from the canal a new more plentiful supply was provided by the ESB drawn from the River Liffey. Since then with the resulting filling in of the Blackwood (Coill Dubh) feeder (mid-40s I think) then reservoir has been allowed to return to nature. The lake is now a wildlife refuge and is again being actively managed to ensure that the bio-diversity built up over fifty years is maintained.

Location

The lake is approx. 3 miles north of Prosperous, Co. Kildare. When coming from Dublin via Clane take a right at the traffic lights at the church, after the village, keep going straight (ignore any roads to the right), climb to the top of small hill (phone tower on right), take the first left after the top of the hill , follow road (abandoned church to the right in corn field) and at next junction, follow the main road at right angle and after the 'swan' house the entrance to the car park is on your.

I(Excuse addme, somebut textyou left out the part about "get in a plane at O'Hare, get off at Shannon, rent a car and then start driving..."
