Bombs killed 17 people in Algiers on Wednesday, with one of them targeting the prime minister's headquarters at the centre of the Algerian capital, the nation's official news agency, APS, said.
Nine people were killed in the blast at Prime Minister Abdelaziz Belkhadem's headquarters, APS said, adding 32 people were wounded.
Thousands of passersby congregated on the vast steps of the building, as uniformed and plainclothes police attempted to contain the crowd.
Minutes later, another bomb attack targeted a police station in an eastern suburb of Algiers, Bab Ezzouar, near the international airport, witnesses said. That bomb killed eight and wounded 50, APS said.
Police sources said the attack on the government building was a suicide bombing.
Witnesses said the blast shook several buildings and sent shattered glass flying over a distance of 200 to 300 metres. Dozens of people were also injured in the blasts.
Dozens of ambulances converged on the upscale residential neighbourhood in the centre of the Algerian capital, which also houses several ministries, as thousands of people poured onto the streets and survivors were led from the building.
A thick cloud of smoke rose from the site of the blast, which was heard across the city. SO I AM VINNY
