Mainstays of the Matses diet consist of plantains, yucca, nuts and meat when available. Meat may come from birds, armadillo, monkey, or occasionally larger game. The women also go out daily to gather hearts of palm, worms, grubs, berries and fruits. The men go out daily to hunt for big game such as tapir, sloth, monkeys, river turtles and jaguar.
